The Lead Battery 360° Assurance Programme has welcomed two new participating sites: Acumuladores Moura in Brazil and Nyrstar Stolberg in Germany.
The Lead Battery 360° Assurance Programme is a comprehensive process that allows participating sites to undergo independent verification that they are delivering actions supporting the seven Guiding Principles of Lead Battery 360°, which define responsible production and sourcing in the lead battery value chain. Sites that are certified have demonstrated their commitment to adhering to internationally recognised responsible operating practices.
Both sites have signed Letters of Commitments, in which they commit to undergo third-party verification and to meeting all Performance Expectations within 24 months of signature.
Acumuladores Moura
Founded in 1957 in Belo Jardim, Acumuladores Moura is the core company of Grupo Moura and a leading energy-storage battery manufacturer in South America. The group operates six production plants (five in Brazil and one in Argentina) and a proprietary distribution network with more than 80 units across the continent. Grupo Moura also runs a reverse-logistics and recycling programme covering all batteries it sells in Brazil, including a recycling facility in Belo Jardim that has prevented more than 100,000 tons of batteries from being improperly discarded. All distribution units are equipped to collect used batteries, with recovered lead and plastics reintegrated into new products, and all manufacturing sites hold ISO 14001 certification.
Nyrstar Stolberg
Founded in 1848 in Stolberg, Nyrstar Stolberg is one of the world’s largest primary lead smelters and a core European asset of the Nyrstar Group following its acquisition by Trafigura (the site was formerly Ecobat Resources Stolberg GmbH). The multi-metals processing facility has an annual capacity of approximately 155,000 tonnes of refined lead and produces over 100 lead-alloy specifications serving battery, automotive, and industrial markets. Employing around 280 people, the site plays a key role in circular metals processing, recovering lead, silver, and other valuable metals from both primary concentrates and secondary raw materials.
Statement from The Lead Battery 360° Assurance Programme
“The inclusion of Acumuladores Moura and Nystar Stolberg now brings us to ten participating sites in the Lead Battery 360° Assurance Programme. This is an impressive start to this new responsible sourcing and manufacturing assurance programme. We encourage more sites in the lead battery value chain to join us on the journey to deliver responsible practices along the entire battery value chain, no matter where batteries are produced and recycled”
